Padma Vibhushan is awarded for "exceptional and distinguished service", Padma Bhushan is given for "distinguished service of high order" and Padma Shri for "distinguished service in any filed".  These civilian awards are given in almost all disciplines and fields of activities like social work, public affairs, science and engineering, medicine, trade and industry, sports, literature andeducation, art andcivil services.
