Historical monuments in Mumbai...Hutatma Chowk

The square hosts Flora Fountain and was known by that name until 1960. It was officially renamed in 1960 in memory of the members of Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti, who lost their lives when police fired upon their peaceful demonstration. A statue of a "Martyr with a Flame" stands next to Flora Fountain.

Hutatma Chowk is located in the busy financial district of South Mumbai. It derives its present name from an incident in 1960 when a peaceful demonstration by the Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti (United Maharashtra Committee) was fired upon by the police resulting in 105 deaths. The incident was part of ongoing struggles of the Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti, amongst others, for the creation of the State of Maharashtra. The shooting proved to be a major impetus for the creation of Maharashtra on May 1, 1960.

The Hutatma Chowk square is lined on all sides by buildings constructed during the British Raj. An ornate fountain surrounded by delicately carved figures forms the center of the huge square. This was the Flora Fountain.

The fountain itself was built in 1864 and represents the Roman Goddess Flora, the Goddess of Abundance. Today it is a heritage structure. It cost Rs. 47,000 to build, a princely sum at the time and was constructed by the Agri-Horticultural Society of Western India. Cursetjee Fardoonjee Parekh donated Rs.20,000 towards the construction of this fountain. The fountain was carved from stone that was imported from Portland. It was built in honour of Sir Bartle Frere, who was the Governor of Bombay at the time. Sir Frere was responsible for dismantling Bombay Fort and shaping much of modern Mumbai. Initially it was to be named after the Governor but the name was changed before the fountain was unveiled. When it was constructed it was in the middle of the city. Flora fountain stands in exactly the same place where the original Churchgate of Bombay Fort stood. The area around Flora Fountain is the business center of Mumbai and is surrounded by offices, banks, colleges and shops.

Retirement.....February, 2013

Shri A. J. Gajendragadkar, Senior Postmaster, Mumbai Central HO, Mumbai 400008 will retire from Government Service on superannuation on 28/02/2013.

Mobile Money Order Service soon.

RANCHI: Jharkhand neither qualifies as a state, which generates maximum money orders, nor as one that receives too many money orders like Punjab and Bihar, which have long earned the distinction of doing so. This could well have been the reason behind the delay in the launch of the mobile money order service (MMOS) that was launched in Bihar and Punjab much earlier in May 2011.

Jharkhand office of India Post is gearing up for the modern facility that is expected to make money transactions easier for those who do not have an account in a bank or post office.

"A requisition is pending with the office of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) for registration of SIM card to be used in this service. BSNL is acting as a partner in the project. We expect the service to be launched for the customers in Jharkhand within a month," said an officer of the business development section in Ranchi.

The postal department nationally has entered into an agreement with BSNL to provide MMOS using mobile phones. For this purpose, necessary input based on the requirements of the department was furnished to BSNL for development of software.

Under MMOS, money can be transferred to any location in the country once the service is made available in post offices across the country. Sources in the postal department said, "For transactions up to Rs 5000, the postal department charges a fee of 5%, which includes the share of service provider (in this case, BSNL).

While the customers can possess SIM cards of any mobile service provider, BSNL helps generate a code in the post office where a customer deposits money along with a form. The form should contain details of the receiver along with a valid mobile number. Once deposit is made in the post office, a machine-generated code is messaged to the recipient's mobile. The recipient, after producing this code and a proof of identity, can collect the money from any designated branch of the post office.

Broccoli contains high levels of both calcium and vitamin K, both of which are important for bone health and prevention of osteoporosis. Rajiv Gandhi Equity Savings Scheme launched in Mumbai on 9/2/2013.

FM says it will be made more attractive for investors :

Finance Minister P. Chidambaram today formally launched the Rajiv Gandhi Equity Savings Scheme (RGESS) in Mumbai, with a promise to make it more attractive for small investors in the days to come. The Scheme which is aimed at attracting first time investors in Stock market was announced in the budget 2012-13.

Speaking at the launch function attended by top bankers and investment managers, Mr. P Chidambaram termed RGESS was an instrument that would encourage individuals with moderate income to consider equity investment. “Indians save, save even during adverse conditions” he said. He however, regretted that even though the savings accounted for as high as 30-36 percent of GDP, most households preferred to invest in physical assets like gold and real estate. “Even after 22 years of liberalization, despite having a flourishing capital market and a strong regulatory framework, the savings are not channelized into the financial sector” observed FM. He noted that equity was viewed as speculative by most people, but said “investment in equity is good for the investor; good for the financial system.”

Mr. Chidambaram admitted that initially, the RGESS was considered to be a complex instrument and the tax incentive on investment upto Rs 50,000 was not adequate. “We have tried to be creative to make it more attractive; we have allowed mutual funds to participate in RGESS and we have broadened the definition of first time investor to include Demat account holders who have not transacted previously”,he said. FM said there were still certain issues left, which he promised would be addressed during the coming budget.

Mr. Chidambaram also called for simplification of procedures and specifically integration of KYC (Know Your Customer) norms. “There are simply too many regulations. KYC under single regulator must converge in the first phase and thereafter there should be convergence of KYC under different regulators in the market”. He added “If you ask too many questions, you will frighten the investor away; what is the use of so many regulators if investor stays away?”

On the occasion, Mr. Chidambaram also unveiled the logo of RGESS and released a FAQ booklet on the scheme, aimed at creating investor awareness.

There are already 11 Mutual Fund schemes confirming to RGESS. Five new Mutual Fund RGESS schemes - by SBI Mutual, LIC Noumura, IDBI, UTI and DSP Blackrock - were launched today. Under RGESS an individual with annual income less than Rs 10 lakhs would get tax incentives investment upto Rs. 50,000.

SEBI Chairman, S K Sinha, Secretary, Economic Affairs, Arvind Mayaram, CEOs of National Stock Exchange and Bombay Stock Exchange, Senior bankers and investment Managers were present for the RGESS launch in Mumbai.
